A royal good time?

Life's a beach in California /Michelle Locke

You’ve probably heard that Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to put it formally, are visiting California this week, which is causing a moderate flurry of excitement. But it doesn’t look like much of a vacation to me. No Disneyland, no wine country, no Homes of the Stars! tour, not even a quick dip in the Pacific. It appears they’re busy with events highlighting British businesses and filmmakers, raising money for the prince’s charity at a polo match and visiting an arts organization that caters to poor children and teenagers near downtown LA.

If you happen to have $400 to spare, you might still be able to get a spot in the stands for the Foundation Polo Challenge in Santa Barbara on Saturday. Got $4,000? V.I.P. tickets for a private lunch created by Giada De Laurentiis cost that much, with proceeds earmarked for the American Friends of the Foundation of Prince William and Prince Harry. The glam part of the proceedings is a  BAFTA’s “Brits to Watch” event Saturday at the Belasco Theater in Los Angeles.  BAFTA stands for British Academy of Film and Television Arts and  Prince William is president of the group, which I somehow find very surprising.

You never know, the royals might still pop out for a hot dog on the Santa Monica Pier. But just in case this visit is as boring as it looks, I’ve looked up some beach cams and other sites to offer a vicarious voyage through some of our fair state’s hot spots.

Laguna Beach, upscale neighborhoods, blue skies, golden sand _ this is beach living fit for a prince.

Live penguin cams from the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco. Penguins! Cams! What more needs to be said?

Shamu cam. An extremely mellow site where a whole lot of nothing happens, but happens very prettily with a shimmer of blue water, disturbed by the occasional flash of black and white.

Say what?

  • Sparkling wine, as Napoleon more or less said, after meeting deadline you deserve it, when facing deadline, you need it.
  • Came home from interviews smelling like a pastry shop. Reason #112 why being food writer < crime writer.
  • Savoring the last sips of summer. http://t.co/dYCeD7Jy
