Monaco Wedding: UPDATE

July 1, 2011

After a week of rumor and speculation, former Olympic swimmer Charlene Wittstock and Prince Albert of Monaco were married Saturday in a spectacular ceremony that evoked memories of the marriage of Albert’s mother, Grace Kelly, to Prince Rainier II all those years ago.

Red and white, the colors of Monaco, the world’s second-smallest state, (No. 1 is Vatican City. Forgot that, didn’t you?) were in abundance and there was fabulous music, religious guys in funny hats and a sprinkling of celebrities. Roger Moore? A bit random, but OK.

The bride, blonde and regal, looked fantastic in a white dress designed by Armani. Here are the details of what went into the garment:

2,500 hours of work
40,000 Swarovski crystals
20,000 mother of pearl teardrops
30,000 stones in gold shades
3,000 kilometres of travel for fittings in Montecarlo
700 hours of work for the embroidery
“kilometres” of embroidery thread coated in platinum
50 meters of silk duchesse
80 meters of silk organza

For the veil: 20 meters of silk tulle, 100 hours of work for the embroidery

Wow. And to think I’ve been agonizing over whether to return my new Eileen Fisher (packable! on sale!) black dress.

But I digress.

The wedding, which follows a civil ceremony Friday, came after reports of a little bride-and-seek prompted by last-minute jitters. According to the French magazine L’Express, Wittstock allegedly was stopped at the Nice airport trying to fly home to South Africa after learning of some unspecified revelation. The Telegraph reported Saturday that Albert faces a paternity test after the wedding. If true, that would make love child No. 3 for the prince.

Here is a good wrap-up of the situation in The Daily Beast.

These are the kind of details that make me glad I’m a. common as common and b. when I married the lovely M. Vinecdote 26 years ago, we eloped.

Cheers, matrimonially.
