True confession: I have never encountered a snotty sommelier. Maybe they were back in the walk-in laughing up a storm at my rube ways _ for one thing, it was quite some time before I learned that you don’t, in fact, pronounce it somm-EH-lee-yer _ but the scenario of the stereotypical lofty old wine steward looking down his nose as I select something from the cheaper end of the list has not played out for me IRL.
So, I was interested to see this trailer for SOMM, which follows four people trying to get through the grueling Master Sommelier exam. Here’s a link to the test requirements. I think the 10 percent pass rate says a lot.
No word yet on when the film comes out, but the trailer is a lot of fun, right down to the exploding bottle of champagne at the end. Which is probably not part of the actual exam.
Wine afficionados will also see a few familiar faces including Chateau Montelena’s Bo Barrett. “They just take it so seriously,” Barrett says in the SOMM trailer, and, boy, is he right. Barrett, by the way, is the basis for the Chris Pine character in the somewhat fictionalized but still fun “Bottle Shock” commemorating Chateau Montelena’s shocking win in the white wine category in a famous wine tasting in Paris in 1976. (You want to talk snobby, you should check out some of the comments made by those tasters.)
Oh, and I’m sure you know this, but just in case, it’s SOH-mel-yay.
