Toast Robert Mondavi’s 99th Birthday

Wine country pioneer Robert Mondavi died in 2008 but his legacy lives on and you can help celebrate his achievements.

On June 15th, which would have been Mondavi’s 99th birthday, the Robert Mondavi Winery in the Napa Valley will host a toast to recognize Mondavi’s life and accomplishments. As it has been for the past few years, the event will also be held online with a happy hour toast streaming live on Facebook.

Mondavi sold his winery before he died and it’s now owned by Constellation. But the director of winemaking is still Genevieve Janssens, an interesting personality herself, who will lead the salute.

Go here to find out how to take part.

And here are a few suggestions if you are sipping along at home.

Robert Mondavi  Winery 2010 Winery Fume Blanc

Revolutionary for its time and an example of Mondavi’s marketing and winemaking genius, fume blanc is a term that Mondavi made up to distinguish his sauvignon blanc, made in a drier style, from the sauvignon blancs on the market at the time which were sweeter and didn’t have a good reputation.  A light, fresh-tasting wine with some citrus against a background of melon and honey for sweetness.

Robert Mondavi Winery 2008 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

An excellent red, full and rich but not so tannic that it will leave you puckering up. Tastes like black fruit, currants and blackberries, with a little spicy kick.
